The case in brief
On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk — the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA and one of the most prominent conservative organizers in the country — was shot once while answering questions at an outdoor campus event attended by roughly 3,000 people at Utah Valley University. Officials say the shot came from a rooftop more than 400 feet away. Kirk was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. The shooting set off a manhunt that ended about 33 hours later, not with an arrest raid but with a surrender: after the FBI released surveillance photos, Robinson's parents recognized their son, and a family friend — a retired detective — helped bring him in.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray charged Robinson with aggravated murder and six other counts, and announced that the state would seek the death penalty. The charging documents describe a note left for Robinson's roommate, a series of text messages in which prosecutors say Robinson admitted the shooting and explained his reasoning, DNA evidence, and a rifle recovered in a wooded area near campus. Robinson's court-appointed defense team has challenged the state's evidence and its death-penalty theory at every stage, and has fought — largely unsuccessfully — to limit camera access to the proceedings.
After a week-long preliminary hearing in July 2026, Judge Tony Graf ruled on September 1, 2026, that prosecutors had shown probable cause on every count, and Robinson pleaded not guilty. What remains is the trial itself: its date is expected to be set on October 23, 2026. Everything in this file is drawn from court filings, official statements, and the reporting linked on each page. The allegations have not been proven, and this file takes no position on them.

September 10, 2025 — the shootingAt about 12:23 p.m., during an outdoor Turning Point USA event in UVU's Fountain Courtyard attended by roughly 3,000 people, a single shot strikes Charlie Kirk as he answers an audience question. Officials say the shot was fired from the roof of the Losee Center, more than 400 feet away. Kirk is rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital; President Trump announces his death at 2:40 p.m. Two men detained on campus that day are questioned and released. UVU closes its campuses. — USA TODAY timeline; court records READ ARTICLE
September 10–11, 2025 — the manhuntInvestigators release surveillance video of a figure crossing the Losee Center roof and dropping to the ground. On the morning of September 11, officials announce that a high-powered bolt-action rifle has been recovered from a wooded area near campus, wrapped in a towel. At about 10 a.m. the FBI releases photographs of a "person of interest"; a reward of up to $100,000 is announced. More than 20 agencies join the search and thousands of tips come in. — USA TODAY timeline; FBI statements as reported READ ARTICLE
September 11, 2025 — recognitionAccording to prosecutors, after the FBI photos are published, Robinson's father sends him a text — "Tyler, is this you? This looks like you" — and his parents confront him. A family member then reaches out to a family friend: a retired Washington County detective who knows the family through their church. The friend calls Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby, who coordinates with Utah County authorities. — Prosecutors' account at the preliminary hearing, as reported; Sheriff Brooksby's public account
September 11–12, 2025 — the surrenderOn the evening of September 11, the retired detective drives Robinson and his parents to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, where Robinson is taken into custody peacefully — about 10 p.m., roughly 33 hours after the shooting, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. On September 12, Governor Spencer Cox announces the arrest, thanks the family for doing "the right thing," and says investigators believe Robinson acted alone. Cox also describes inscriptions officials say were found on shell casings recovered with the rifle, and a roommate's account of messages about retrieving the rifle. — Gov. Cox's September 12, 2025 press conference, as reported READ ARTICLE
September 16, 2025 — charges, and the death penaltyUtah County Attorney Jeff Gray files seven counts and announces his office will seek the death penalty. Gray says the decision was his alone, based on the evidence and the nature of the crime, and says Robinson's DNA was found on the trigger of the recovered rifle. The charging document quotes a note officials say was found under the roommate's keyboard — in which the writer said he had the opportunity to "take out" Kirk and was going to take it — and a text exchange in which, prosecutors allege, Robinson admitted the shooting, said he had planned it for a little over a week, and explained that he had "had enough of his hatred." Robinson appears by video the same day; he is held without bail and found unable to afford counsel.
Exhibit — The seven counts (from the Information, as announced)1) Aggravated murder (capital felony), alleging the defendant knowingly created a great risk of death to others. 2) Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury. 3) Obstruction of justice — moving and concealing the rifle. 4) Obstruction of justice — disposing of clothing. 5) Witness tampering — directing his roommate to delete texts. 6) Witness tampering — directing his roommate to stay silent. 7) Commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. Prosecutors also allege a victim-targeting enhancement: that Kirk was targeted for his political expression. Every count is an allegation.

September 12–21, 2025 — Erika KirkKirk's widow speaks publicly for the first time on September 12, vowing that her husband's voice and movement will continue. On September 18, Turning Point USA names her its CEO. On September 21, before tens of thousands at a memorial in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, she says of the accused man that she forgives him — because, she says, it is what Christ did and what Charlie would do. She has also said that the decision whether Robinson should face the death penalty belongs to the government, not to her. — Erika Kirk's public remarks, as reported READ ARTICLE
September 24, 2025 — the defenseThe Utah County Commission appoints Kathryn Nester — a former federal public defender with capital-case experience — as Robinson's lead counsel, after the court found he could not afford an attorney. Her team grows to include Michael Burt, Richard Novak, Wendy Lewis and Staci Visser. Nester declines to comment on the case. — Utah County Commission; Reuters, as reported
October–December 2025 — cameras and decorumThe pretrial fight over access begins. Under an October 30, 2025 decorum order, Judge Graf allows cameras but restricts how Robinson may be filmed. In December, a livestream is briefly halted after it shows Robinson's shackles; Graf rules he may wear civilian clothes but must remain restrained, and bars the media from publishing images of his restraints, to protect the presumption of innocence. On December 29, Graf orders a redacted transcript and audio of a closed hearing released — only 246 words of an 80-page transcript withheld — and requires the parties to notify the media before seeking future closures. — Associated Press, Dec. 29, 2025 READ ARTICLE
Early 2026 — the ballistics disputeA defense filing brings public attention to an ATF toolmark examination that court records describe as inconclusive: examiners could not determine whether a bullet fragment recovered in the autopsy came from the rifle officials recovered. A March 30, 2026 tabloid headline — that the bullet "did not match" the rifle — is disputed by prosecutors, who say the fragment's caliber is consistent and that testing continues; court filings say the FBI is conducting additional tests. In March interviews, Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard goes beyond correcting the report and publicly expresses confidence that the state will prove Robinson's guilt — the comments at the center of the next fight. — Court filings and the June 2026 contempt ruling, as reported READ ARTICLE
June 26, 2026 — contempt; the death penalty staysJudge Graf finds Ballard in civil contempt: correcting the record was permitted under the court's pretrial publicity order, but his further statements about the strength of the state's case violated it. The judge denies the defense request to strike the death penalty as a remedy, calling that "grossly disproportionate" to the misconduct, and orders expanded jury selection instead. — Washington Examiner, June 26, 2026 READ ARTICLE
Summer 2026 — the road to the hearingThe defense asks for a blanket ban on cameras at the preliminary hearing and a stay while it appeals the camera and hearsay rulings. Graf denies the blanket ban — coverage requests are decided hearing by hearing — and the Utah Supreme Court declines to take the appeal or pause the case. The hearing goes forward on July 6, 2026. — Court rulings, as reported READ ARTICLE
July 6–10, 2026 — the preliminary hearingOver five days, prosecutors present surveillance video of a figure on campus and on the Losee Center roof; a Utah Department of Public Safety witness on distances and line of sight; and FBI forensic examiner Amanda Bakker, who testifies about DNA mixtures on a screwdriver recovered from the rooftop and the towel recovered with the rifle — testifying, as reported, that Robinson's profile was the major contributor on one tested item and his roommate Lance Twiggs a minor contributor. The court plays Twiggs' recorded interview — about 37 minutes recorded, with roughly 16 minutes withheld from the public version by court order. On July 9, an image of the alleged note is briefly broadcast against the court's limits; on July 10, Graf bars the broadcast of exhibits but keeps cameras in the room. Robinson, on his lawyers' advice, does not testify. Erika Kirk and Kirk's parents attend; the family later says the week brought them comfort that the public witnessed the evidence.
Exhibit — A prosecution filing (July 28, 2026)In a later filing, prosecutors state that Robinson admitted the shooting in writing at least 11 times, including in messages to Twiggs and to a Discord group. The defense has challenged the admissibility and characterization of the state's statements evidence. Both are litigation positions; neither has been tested before a jury. — Prosecution filing, as reported
September 1, 2026 — bound over for trialAfter four hours of closing argument from each side, Judge Graf finds probable cause on all seven counts, including the allegation that the shot knowingly created a great risk of death to people near Kirk — citing the clear line of sight from the southwest roof, the rifle's optical sight, and the people positioned around Kirk. The written bind-over order is published September 2. A bind-over is a probable-cause finding only; it is not a finding of guilt. — CNN, Sept. 2, 2026 READ ARTICLE
September 1, 2026 — not-guilty pleasAt arraignment the same day, Nester enters not-guilty pleas on Robinson's behalf to all charges. The Kirk family calls the ruling "an important step in our family's pursuit of justice." Graf sets a pretrial conference for October 23, 2026, at which trial dates are expected to be set. — CNN; Associated Press reporting READ ARTICLE
September 25, 2026 — the university's reckoningUVU releases an external, independent after-action review of the event's security. It finds the university conducted no formal security assessment and no written event action plan, and deferred key decisions to Turning Point USA, which had insisted on the outdoor courtyard; it makes nearly 150 recommendations. UVU President Jon Anderson, who took office in August 2026, says the university has a responsibility to learn from the findings. Earlier in September, the Kirk family sent Utah officials a wrongful-death notice of claim alleging a string of reckless decisions left Kirk exposed. — Associated Press via CNN, Sept. 25, 2026 READ ARTICLE

The defense · 2025–2026Lead counsel Kathryn Nester declined comment when appointed. The unverified record — what is being said online
Claims circulating online that no court filing or official statement has established. They are recorded here because they are part of this case's public life — and labeled for exactly what they are.
Commentator Candace Owens has said she does not believe Robinson is solely responsible, has called the released text messages "doctored," and has described him as a "patsy." Fact-checkers and other outlets note she has presented no verifiable evidence for these claims. Erika Kirk met with Owens in December 2025 and asked that speculation stop; Owens did not retract her claims. UNVERIFIED— Owens' podcast statements, as reported
Claims of foreign-government involvement in the assassination have circulated widely online, including insinuations about Israel. Israeli officials have denied involvement, and no court record supports the claims. UNVERIFIED— Online commentary, as reported
An "exploding microphone" theory — that a device on Kirk's person, rather than a rifle shot, caused the fatal wound — has been promoted in online discussions as recently as October 2026. No medical examiner finding or court evidence supports it; the evidence presented in court attributes the wound to a rifle shot. UNVERIFIED— Online commentary, as reported
Officials, including Governor Cox, have stated that the evidence indicates Robinson acted alone. The court record — not the online record — is what the trial will test.

How to read this file: Tyler Robinson is presumed innocent. A judge has found probable cause — the lowest evidentiary threshold in the process — and nothing in this file should be read as a finding that any allegation is true. The prosecution's evidence, the defense's challenges to it, and the court's rulings are each recorded as what they are, attributed to their sources. The death penalty described here is a penalty prosecutors say they will seek; it could be imposed only by a jury, after a conviction, in a trial that has not yet been scheduled. CrowdSleuth draws no conclusion of its own.
