Torrance "Tory" Medley

Torrance Medley — "Tory" to his family — was a 39-year-old Milwaukee man and former MATC student who, those close to him say, was quiet and often said through his drawings what he had difficulty saying aloud. On the evening of Tuesday, November 11, 2025, he was last seen leaving the Milwaukee rooming house where he lived. Two days later, shortly before noon on Thursday, November 13, first responders found him dead at the Brookfield Hills Golf Course in Brookfield, a suburb roughly ten miles west — kneeling at a tree, a strap around his neck fixed to a branch, his feet on the ground, as the police chief later described the scene.

The Brookfield Police Department characterized the death as a suicide the same day, telling FOX6 News Milwaukee that the preliminary investigation indicated suicide and that police had no information a crime was involved. Ten days later, on November 23, Chief Chris Garcia issued a fuller written statement: the investigation indicates Medley died by suicide, asphyxiation by his own body weight; there were no injuries beyond asphyxiation, and no evidence that anyone else was present; the department noted that Medley had been experiencing mental-health challenges in the days before his death; the Medical Examiner's Office had completed an autopsy; and the case remained open while detectives reviewed possible surveillance footage.

His family has not accepted how quickly that conclusion was reached. His sister, Shena Medley, said publicly that the death was labeled a possible suicide before basic questions were examined — starting with the one the family returns to in every statement: Medley had no car, and they know of no reason he would be at a Brookfield golf course at night. Through attorney William Sulton, and standing with the Waukesha and Milwaukee branches of the NAACP, the family has demanded the surveillance footage, the autopsy results and a complete timeline. Some footage has since been shown or released to the family — transit video from November 11 and video placing Medley in Brookfield on November 12 — while the family continues to seek camera footage from the three hotels and the golf course surrounding the spot where he was found. As of the end of December 2025, neither the police department nor the Medical Examiner's Office had released a final, official cause of death. This file records the positions and the paper trail — attributed, in order — and nothing beyond them.

  • Wednesday, November 12, 2025Surveillance footage places Medley in Brookfield — video the family was shown only after weeks of requests. How he made the trip from Milwaukee, and why, remains the family's central unanswered question: he had no car, and the family says they know of no reason for him to be in Brookfield. — MATC Times READ ARTICLE
  • Thursday, November 13, 2025 — shortly before noonFirst responders dispatched to the Brookfield Hills Golf Course, near I-94 and Moorland Road, find Medley dead at a tree. Chief Garcia later describes the scene: kneeling, feet on the ground, a strap around his neck attached to a branch. The same day, the department tells FOX6 News Milwaukee that the preliminary investigation is indicating suicide, and that police have no information at this point to indicate a crime was involved.
Exhibit — The surroundingsThe spot where Medley was found is ringed by three hotels as well as the golf course itself — all of which, the family notes, have surveillance cameras. Which of those cameras recorded anything, and what they show, is the factual core of the family's records fight (see the records tracker, below).

  • Mid-November 2025 — the family answersShena Medley, his sister, publishes a public statement: the death was, in her words, immediately labeled a possible suicide before critical questions about how he got there were examined, and the family demands complete transparency. The family also opens a fundraiser toward an independent autopsy (priced in the fundraiser at $4,500) and independent forensic analysis, saying police have declined to pursue forensic testing because they do not believe a crime occurred. — Shena Medley's public statement READ ARTICLE; Family fundraiser READ ARTICLE
  • Sunday, November 23, 2025 — the chief's statementChief Chris Garcia issues a detailed written news release. Its contents: at this stage of the investigation there is no indication of foul play; other than injuries caused by asphyxiation there were no other obvious signs of trauma; there is no evidence at the scene suggesting any other individuals were present; it appears Medley used his own body weight to cause asphyxiation; the department is aware Medley was experiencing mental-health challenges in the days before his death; the Medical Examiner's Office has completed an autopsy; and the case remains open while detectives review possible surveillance footage and continue communicating with a family member. The chief pledges the department will follow the facts wherever they lead and share additional verified information when available. — Brookfield PD news release, Nov. 23, 2025, as carried in reporting READ ARTICLE READ ARTICLE
  • Friday, November 28, 2025 — the press conferenceThe family, attorney William Sulton, and representatives of the Waukesha and Milwaukee NAACP branches hold a news conference near the golf course (reported by the Waukesha Freeman; one aggregator printed the date as "Nov. 29"). The family says it has not been shown surveillance video, injury details or investigative findings, and that it has been mistreated by the police department and the Medical Examiner's Office. Sulton argues the chief reached a conclusion before the investigation was complete, that death investigations belong to forensic pathologists rather than police officers, and that the family has no reason to believe Medley would take his own life or be at that golf course. Montre Moore of the Waukesha NAACP describes the chapter's role as a bridge — making sure communication and respect are there. The Freeman reports that its attempts to reach the police department and the Medical Examiner's Office for additional comment were unsuccessful. — Waukesha Freeman via BOSSIP READ ARTICLE; press-conference reporting READ ARTICLE
  • The autopsy questionTwo examinations frame this file. The Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office completed an autopsy, according to the police statement; its report and findings have not been publicly released in the record this file relies on. Separately, the family fundraised for an independent autopsy and independent forensic analysis of the evidence. No independent findings have been published. — Brookfield PD statement READ ARTICLE; Family fundraiser READ ARTICLE
  • December 29, 2025 — the footage, in partThe Final Call reports that Shena Medley and attorney Sulton have been shown video footage of Medley, that additional footage remains under review and has not all been made available to the family because the investigation is ongoing — and that, as of its press time, the Brookfield Police Department and the Waukesha County Medical Examiner have yet to complete their forensic investigations and release the official cause of death. — The Final Call, Dec. 29, 2025 READ ARTICLE
  • 2026 — what the family has, and what it still seeksIn a later account, MATC Times reports that after weeks of pushing, the family received footage of Medley taking a bus back toward downtown Milwaukee on November 11, and footage of him in Brookfield on November 12. The family continues to seek fuller disclosure — including the hotel and golf-course cameras around the site — and Shena Medley's stated position is that she will accept whatever the facts show, and wants the information shared so everyone is looking at the same record. — MATC Times READ ARTICLE
  • The record todayThe last official word in this file is the police department's: an investigation indicating suicide, a case described as open, and an official final cause of death not yet released as of late December 2025. No final Medical Examiner ruling, case closure, or further departmental statement appears in the record this file relies on as of October 2026. How to read this file: The police position is recorded above as the official position, in the department's own sequence of statements. The family's, their attorney's and the NAACP's positions are recorded as theirs — attributed, and no more established than their sources make them. The central documents in this case — the complete footage and the final Medical Examiner ruling — have not been released, and until they are, CrowdSleuth draws no conclusion of its own.

A note for readers: this file concerns a death that police say was a suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling, in the U.S. you can call or text 988 — the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — at any time.
